Dr. Behling believes that collaboration between health care providers and schools is key in helping a child or adolescent succeed. For most children, time spent at school is second only to time spent in the home. Teachers, classroom aides, school counselors, administration, and other staff members play a vital role in helping psychologists obtain important information about a child's psychological functioning, including academic performance, peer relationships, and overall emotional well-being.

SUPPORT FOR EDUCATORS & PARAPROFESSIONALS

Supporting the needs of a diverse group of learners can be challenging, especially when many educational settings are underfunded and resources are limited. Teachers, paraprofessionals, and other school staff members are expected to support not only a student’s academic learning, but their development of emotion regulation skills, social skills, executive functioning skills, problem solving abilities, and more. Amidst all this pressure, children, teachers, schools, and communities face devastating and heartbreaking incidents of community violence, natural disasters, discrimination, economic shifts, and more. A sufficient list of resources for all the challenges educators and students face seems impossible to create; nevertheless, the links below may be a good start. Additional links that may be helpful for educators can be found on the resources for families page.

REFERRING A STUDENT FOR THERAPY & SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN NEED

If you would like to refer a student for counseling at SeaPsych, but aren't sure how approach the topic with the student's parent or caregiver, please contact Dr. Behling to discuss ways other educators have engaged in a respectful, sensitive discussion with parents about the potential benefits of meeting with a psychologist. If a parent or caregiver has asked you for suggestions for books they and/or their child might find useful in responding to a learning/emotional difficulty, please visit the resources for parents page for some potential ideas.
